Live coding silent movies

In the programme Signifikantenstadl we play algorithmic music with silent films. The film material consists of small excerpts that when watched carefully, unfold their deeper meaning with ease. The algorithmic sounds are modified by rewriting the source code.

Instead of adding a layer of pit music - a sound-track that simply gives emotion to the film, we add an artificial sound-track that reveals more ambiguous aspects of the film. What was the purpose of this glance? And whose purpose was it? We don't know.

live coding

For the accompaniment of silent film we don't show our source code, since it would distract from the movie. We are working on a solution of inserting intertitles with code - Dave Griffiths has made some steps toward an implementation: here (some source code)
